Melbourne Fashion Festival is not only Australia's biggest fashion event, but arguably the most sartorial. Whether you're attending the shows in person or watching from the comfort of your own home, getting dressed up is the best way to dust off those post-Covid blues.

We all know Melbourne is renowned for it's passion for black clothing. Dubbed the 'uniform' of the southern capital it's hard to get black wrong.

Diversifying all black is key in taking the look from drab to fab. If you're a girl who likes to mix her mediums, leather is a fantastic place to start. Investing in real leather can be spenny so try hit one key item such as a pant from Toni Maticevski. A timeless silhouette in a classic colour-way is going to see you get wear for years to come. Pair with a Vegan Leather piece, in this case a blazer from Unreal Fur and you've managed to get the desired effect for half the price.

The subtle art of all black dressing does not mean that you're fading into a dark corner. If you're one to stand out from the crowd, go all out with your layering. Start with good undergarments, and break up the black with the right amount of skin. Not enough? Keep going ladies! Pack on the blazers to ensure talking points are as plentiful as the garments you have on. Ensure to layer your collars for added drama and dimension.

When at the Royal Exhibition Building, you cannot avoid the uber-cool skaters showing their sartorial skill on the periphery of Melbourne Fashion Festival. Start with some tie-dye. 10 Pieces is a fantastic place to look but don't forget vintage or even homemade! Pair with a pair of epic, statement denim to turn up the volume. Garnish with a bucket hat and you're as good as a street-style star.

For the more feminine inclined do not shy away from the drama this year. This beautiful red set from Aje will ensure you're recognised on even the darkest of autumn evenings. Play with separates and colour. By purchasing alternate pieces you will ensure you get multiple wears out of both a top and a skirt throughout the year. Not wanting to break the bank? Always remember you can rent! Many of your favourite designer pieces are available for as little as an overnight hire. We recommend starting with Fashion Alta Moda for serious va va voom.

We know a lot of you sartorial sweethearts head directly from the office to the shows. This doesn't mean you have to be any less dressed! A beautiful leather shift dress (office appropriate, naturally) can be worn to desk during the day. Flip to dusk, all it needs is a pop of colour with shoe and bag and you're as good as ready for the front row.
